Competition Mat Area

The mat area for competitions will be 12 metres x 12 metres. The area that the judo players compete in is 8m x 8m and this includes the RED area, which is 1 metre wide, and is known as the danger area. The danger area warns the players that they are approaching the edge of the mat and are in danger of falling on the hard floor. To ensure that players do not do this, they are stopped should they go beyond the RED area, and in some instances may be given a penalty for this action. Outside of the red area is a further 2 metres of mat called the safety area.
